Environmental Learning Center

Lake Metroparks recently opened the parkland at the Environmental Learning Center for public access. Hikers will enjoy more than 2.5 miles of trails with a variety of trail surfaces including natural surfaces, in addition to the park district’s well-manicured trails. The Greenway Corridor and nearby Chair Factory Falls can be easily accessed from a trail near the parking lot at the Environmental Learning Center. Beautiful views of a picturesque waterfall, deep ravines, creeks and an expansive wooded are featured at this park. The Environmental Learning Center is located on nearly 200 acres of beautiful and ecologically diverse open space, rich in both cultural and natural history. Two Grand River tributaries, Big Creek and Jordan Creek, run through and are protected on this property.

Within this park’s 943 acres, visitors can experience the beauty of many different types of habitats – dense forests, fields and wetlands. Audubon Ohio has designated this park as an Important Bird Area. The Buckeye Trail, marked with light blue blazes on the trees, runs through Girdled Road Reservation. This 4.8 mile paved trail links the municipalities of Painesville, Painesville Township and Concord Township allowing visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of these communities in a safe environment. Access to Chair Factory Falls. Travelers will cross two bridges and experience varied levels of terrain ranging from 660’ elevation in Painesville to an elevation of 895’ in Concord Township. The southern end of the trail connects the Greenway Corridor with The Maple Highlands Trail to Chardon.
Gully Brook Park

Within the park boundaries, Big Creek flows past the picnic area and empties into the Grand River. Kellogg Creek flows into Big Creek near the parking lot. Fishermen cross the creek and floodplain to fish the river for steelhead trout and smallmouth bass. Hell Hollow Wilderness Area

Hell Hollow Wilderness Area has a high cliff top with a loop trail and 262 timber steps that provide a dramatic descent to the creek valley. The more than 100-foot-dep ravine was carved thousands of years ago by Paine Creek after glaciers retreated from Ohio. This park offers impressive views of the 360-million-year-old Chagrin Shale cliff above a deep river valley. Audubon Ohio has designated this park as an important Bird Area. 845 acres. Lake Metroparks Farmpark is a family-oriented science and cultural center devoted to agriculture, farming and country life. USA Today named Farmpark “one of 10 great locations to dig up old dirt on farming.” Visitors can milk dairy cows, learn how cheese is made and meet dozens of breeds of livestock. On weekends and during special events you may help make ice cream the old-fashioned way! Horse-or-tractor-drawn wagon rides are the mode of transportation throughout the park. Explore the Plant Science Center to see a greenhouse, hydroponic display and the Great Tomato works exhibit. Visit the Woodland Center to learn the history of maple sugaring and what it takes to produce maple syrup. The park also features a reservable pavilion, gift shop and cafe. Admission applies. This 21-acre lakefront park features a beach with a gradual slope and sandy bottom. Recreational opportunities on the waterfront include kayaking, canoeing, sailing, boating, camps and special beach programs/festivals. The park features restrooms, a handicapped-accessible harbor view deck, dog swim areas, showers, changing rooms, concessions, amphitheater, volleyball courts, playground and picnic area with grills. Food concessions open daily, weather permitting, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. A $2 parking fee applies to Lake County residents, $3 for out-of-county visitors.
Mason’s Landing Park

Located along a section of the Grand River designated as Wild, Mason’s Landing offers a 1/2 mile gravel trail that meanders through the wooded floodplain and features a variety of wildflowers in the spring. It is a popular access point for fishing, canoes and kayaks. A favorite canoe route is from Hidden Valley Park to Mason’s Landing, a distance of about nine miles. Canoe access. 133 acres.
